In 1802 the first known European ship entered to now what is know as port Phillip bay, the British were very worried when they saw french ships over in the distance. The NSW governor king asked john Murray to go over and claim it for the king of England
By the 1830's Britain saw the colony in NSW as less of a prison and more of a free settlement, many settlers were eager to get rich land and become wealthy but to do this they needed good land
It is not know where John batman signed his tready with the eight indigenous people he saw as chiefs, the deal was he would get about 243,000 hectares of prime farming land across the Yarra he would give them clothing, flour, weapons, tools, mirrors blankets
John batman was to be disappointed as he soon learnt later on that his proposal was declared invalid due to the land being claimed by the British government on the 6th of august 1835 and only they could sell the land and all people on that land who are living on the land were trespassing and would be punished
Many white settlers thought and recognised the aboriginal people and also recognised that the aboriginal people has rights in the lands (this was later confirmed in court 1837)
John batman and his associates from Hobart then later settled at what is now called indented head at Geelong, and melbourne was named in march 1837
