  • One day, Tom Walker went into the wild, into a tangled swamp. At an old Indian fort, he found a skull. The Devil appeared and told him to leave it alone. Romantic characteristics: Journeying into the wild, nostalgia for the past
  • who are you?
  • I'm Old Scratch. Let that skull alone
  • The Devil offered to show Tom the location of Captain Kidd's buried treasure in return for a deal. Tom is unafraid and interested in treasure. Romantic Characteristics: Sponteneity over reason
  • I like treasure!
  • I've got a deal for you.
  • Tom goes home and speaks of it to his wife, who is abusive and even more greedy than Tom. She tells him to take the deal with the Devil. He decides not to just because she tells him to. Romantic characteristics: Distrust of women (associated with domestication).
  • Don't boss me around!
  • Go get that treasure!
  • Tom's wife decides to make a deal with the Devil herself and disappears. Tom goes to find her and fin ds only a bag with her heart and liver. He takes the deal with the Devil who tells him he must become a usurer. Tom lends money to and swindles people settling the wilderness. Romantic characteristics: nature over civilization. Tom does the Devil's work while financing destruction of the wild.
  • You killed my wife. I'll take the deal.
  • You have to rip people off.
  • Tom becomes rich and begins to worry about the Devil collecting his debt. He carries a bible, goes to church and judges others. Romantic characteristics: God as nature rather than convention. Tom embraces only the trappings of religion and is a hypocrite.
  • I'm holier than Thou!
  • The Devil knocks at Tom's door and Tom answers but has left his bibles inside. The Devil loads him onto a horse which gallops off with Tom. Tom's ghost is seen haunting the woods still. Romantic characteristics: interest in the supernatural, individual freedom (Tom gives up his ultimate freedom by trading his soul).
