Storyboard Text

  • What is the difference between sex and gender?
  • Gender Inequality
  • Marxism-Feminism and Functionalist Perspective
  • Sex: is the gender you are born with. The chromosomes, hormones that your body secretes, primary and secondary sex characteristics. Gender is what the culture and society classify as being male or female. As we discussed in class: femininity and Masculinity. Femininity as being weak, emotional and natural care givers. Masculinity as being strong, dominant and independent.
  • Jury in Maycomb
  • Gender inequality is "socially created, not based on biological differences, fixed gender roles" (Fiona).
  • Jem asks Atticus why the jury is made up of all men.
  • A functionalist perspective on gender roles is to maximize social efficiency, so male being the dominant one and females being submissive. Marxism-Feminism perspective is that capitalism is what causes gender inequality.
  • Scouts reaction to Atticus's answer to Jem's question
  • In the book when Jem was at the jury, he noticed that how it's made up of all men. Thus showing women aren't important enough to voice they're opinions and don't have the same rights as men.
  • Jem asks Atticus why the jury is made up of all men and no women are present: "why people like us and Miss Maudie don't sit on juries?" (To kill Mockingbird). Atticus replies, "Miss Maudie can't serve on a jury because she is a woman" (TKM). Thus further showing that women don't have the same rights as men. Scout is flabbergasted that women weren't allowed to attend jury's. Atticus further explains that because they have to protect the "frail ladies" (TKM). Atticus then jokes that the women would interrupt the court.
  • Aunt Alexandra "was fanatical on the subject of [Scouts] attire" and this is Scout's response: "I could not possibly hope to be a lady if i wore breeches; when i said i could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't supposed to be doing things that required pants." (TKM). This shows that not only do men thing that way, even the ladies think that. Men should act like men (masculinity) and females should be more lady like (femininity) (Fiona).
