I've been meaning to learn about the carbon cycle, because eating cheese doesn't suffice.
Plants are a very important part of the carbon cycle, they absorb CO2 and produce carbon containing sugars. This process is called photosynthesis!
When animals feed on green plants, they pass carbon compounds to other animals in the upper levels of their food chains. Animals give off carbon dioxide to the atmosphere during respiration.
Respiration is when carbohydrates are converted to water and carbon dioxide. During respiration, both animals and plants return the carbon dioxide they inhaled back to the atmosphere so the carbon cycle can continue.
Decomposers help reclaim carbon from dead organisms and put it back into the carbon cycle so living organisms can use it. Decomposers break down dead plants, animals and waste products. This releases carbon dioxide through cellular respiration.
Combustion puts more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This creates the imbalance that we are experiencing the extra CO2 enhances the already present greenhouse effect.
