The swampland in this area was once filled with animals and plant life, however a town nearby was a massive tourist attraction. They produced a lot of waste, which eventually had to go somewhere and this area was "perfect" for dumping it. With all the waste piling up in the area, the water became toxic and little to no animals remain.
This residential area wasn't always empty of wildlife. It used to be a large field of wildlife but was built on to house tourists in the local area. Not only did it remove that part of the ecosystem but the construction left a large amount of pollution in the air
Now in many cities it is near impossible to see most stars that used to be visible at night due to pollution.
Due to Tourism the people living in this town did not have enough supplies and could not produce enough there to feed tourists let alone themselves. The cause of them not being able to produce enough was because of all the attractions for tourists leading to all the agriculture in the area dying.
Most people have heard about the polar icecaps melting due to global warming, and due to that they want to travel and see what it looks like and if its important to stop it. However, instead of helping the situation their visit to the icecaps causes more pollution without them necessarily realising it.
