Storyboard Text

  • ------------ ------------ ------------ ------------ ------------
  • Judge Hawthorne questions Martha Corey on whether she is a witch or not. Giles interrupts the proceedings to defend his wife and is joined by Danforth, Parris, Hale, Francis and Cheever. Danforth states "We burn a hot fire here; it melts down all concealment". This is symbolic of the crucible.
  • Danforth says "the pure in heart need no lawyers". This is ironic because if your telling the truth, you don't need a lawyer. Proctor presents a petition signed by 91 people who are willing to vouch for the good and hearty character of Elizabeth, Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey. Danforth orders warrants the abundant amount of people who signed the petition.
  • Giles Corey testifies that Thomas Putnam encourages Ruth Putnam to make accusations against George Jacobs so Putnam could get his land. Giles doesn't reveal any names and information and is arrested for contempt of the court.
  • When Danforth questions Abigail, she looks up at the ceiling and claims to see a yellow bird. Abigail blames Mary Warren on the bird being there and says she is conjuring up spirits. The bird symbolizes witchcraft as well as the corruption of Abigail.
  • Mary is now sided with the girls and throws Proctor under the bus. She says she will never hurt Abigail again which is an example of verbal irony because she says she is helping. Proctor is filled with wrath as he is later arrested for witchcraft.
