Death (narrating): The first bomb hit Tommy Muller's house. Everybody was asleep. I take Tommy first, then his sister. After, I take their mother, only a few feet away from them.
Death: Next was Frau Holtzapfel. She appeared to be waiting for me in her kitchen. She seemed to be asking me "What the hell has taken you so long?"
Death: The next house I visited was Rudy Steiner's. This is the hardest house to visit. His lemon-colored hair will haunt me. He was laying at the edge of his bed with his sister when I came, looking so peaceful and inoccent. I carried him with much more caution than anyone else.
The last house I went to was the Hubermann's house. When I went to take Hanns his soul sat up to meet me. The best souls always do. The ones who rise up and say "I know who you are and I am ready. Not that I want to go, but I will." These souls are always the lightest, but there was an immense pull towards the basement, Towards his daughter. But there was no Liesl in that house for me.
The last one for me was Rosa, and I truly think I picked her up midsnore. If she had seen me, I'm sure she would have called me a Saukerl, and after having read The Book Theif I would not have taken it badly. I discovered that she called everyone that, especially the ones she loved.
When the LSE pulled Liesel from all the rubble she was screaming for Hans. The man had told her Himmel Street had been bombed, but she was in shock and still could not believe what had all happened and she continued yelling for Hanns, Rosa, and even Max. Soon she started to see all of her friends and neighbors.
