On the way to Munich, Liesel Meminger the Book Theif dreams of Adolf Hitler. Instantaneously, Liesel's younger brother Werner dies. Liesel and her mother exit the train with Werner's body and bury him in town. Suddenly one of the gravediggers drops a book, and Liesel picks the book up. Only then to continue traveling to Munich.
Once the Bonfire is lit, Liesel notifies Hans Hubermanns that she hates Adolf Hitler. He slaps her across her face and informs her not to say any such thing. As night follows, Liesel notices a book that has not been burned. As the soldiers are distracted, she sneaks forwards and steals the book called The Shoulder Shrug, and hides it in her shirt.
We are introduced to a Jewish man named Max who was hiding in a secret storage room in Stuttgart. A man provides him with carrots, stale bread, and a piece of fat, and an identity card. Max then comes out of hiding and gets on a train to Munich, grasping the book MKPF, pretending to read it so he wouldn't be detected. Once Max arrives in Molching, he follows his map that leads to the Hubermanns' house. In an instant, he takes out a key preparing to enter.
