As Hans no longer joining the Nazi Party, he is stopped by a fellow man and asked if he would keep his promise to care for the Vandenburg family. Max who is now known as the son of Erik Vandenburg, is let into the Hubermanns' house. The following day Hans takes Liesel into the basement to explain his relationship with Max and reminds her of the promise she made about keeping a secret.
After Rudy is caught trying to steal from the mayor's house, and given a brutal punishment from Franz Deutscher. He and Liesel return to the gang of apple thieves. Viktor Chemmel, the new gang leader, spots the book The Whistler in Liesel's hands. He then snatches it from her hands and throws it into the river. Rudy jumps in and saves the book for Liesel. He asks for a kiss from Liesel, only then to be rejected.
Liesel and Rudy are playing soccer outside when Liesel spots Nazi Party Members checking basements to see if they qualify for bomb shelters. Liesel realizes that she must warn Max, Rosa, and Hans. She purposely gets injured and weeps for Han. Liesel warns Max but doesn't have enough time to hide him. The Nazi Party Members check the basement only to find nothing.
