Storyboard Text

  • Mommy, how did grandpa die?
  • Your grandfather died of cancer little Louis.
  • But mom, what is cancer?
  • Cancer is the uncontrolled division of cells resulting from multiple genetic mutations.
  • But don't cells divide all the time?
  • Well, sometimes during cell division a transcription error can occur where several genes are copied wrong over several division cycles.
  • These errors will cause the cell to ignore the signal protein in its signal transduction pathway that signals the cell to stop dividing.
  • More genes that can be mutated to cause cancer are tumor suppressor genes, which look out for high levels of cell division and stops it before it gets out of hand.
  • These mutated genes become proto-oncogenes, which can become oncogenes, the genes that cause cancers.
  • Your grandfather was an unhealthy man- he smoked, ate whatever he wanted in excess, and he worked at a paint factory. He had a lot of exposure to carcinogens throughout life.
  • He was always more scared of viruses than cancer. He always said, "Helen, I'll be damned if I worry about cancer before I worry about a virus reprogramming my transcription factors."
  • The carcinogens your grandfather got exposed to damaged his genes in the transcription process, meaning his mutated cells could have produced nonfunctioning proteins.
  • I'm only 9 I don't understand! I miss grandpa!
  • Everyone will eventually get cancer it's just a question of whether you live long enough.
