Hale starts to test Proctor by asking him to recite the ten commandments because he believes Proctor isn't a holy man. Hale and Elizabeth then gets the suspicion that Proctor is cheating because he skipped over the 7th commandment which is, "Thou shalt not commit adultery".

Francis and Giles come in saying that their wives had been sent away to jail. Rebecca Nurse had been accused of the murder of Ann Putnam's 7 infants. Giles' wife was accused by a friend taking revenge.
