After WW2 only America and the two countries lef was the USA and the Soviet Union. Both were powerful and the world wondered who would be more dominate. On Oct 4, 1957 the USSR launched the sputnik 1 . This schocked the American government with the thought that another country had reached their level of technology. With this the government freaked out all at once.
With the launch of Sputnik 1 set off a series of other launches. The first continental missile on Aug 21, 1957 and the Untied states first satellite launched Jan 31, 1958. With these the ''Space Race'' had officially begun. One of the most progressive company's in space exploration, NASA or National Aeronautics and Space Administration was formed on Oct 1, 1958. The space race had soon began to pick up steam with the end goal to land the firdt man on the moon.
The space race continued to pick up speed when the first man was launched into space. Yuri Gargin orbits the earth one time and official becomes the first man in space. The Untied States continued to try to keep pace with the advanced Soviet Union. The gap however was slowly starting to close .
America was still in shock with the USSR being in the lead with the space race. Along with the announcement of creating NASA from the space race they announced the first program to be launched the Gemmi project on December 7, 1961. America was continuing to close the gap between the United Sates and the USSR with the Gemmi project being another step.
Scientist continued with trying new tactics and different approaches to finally close the gap between the United States and the USSR. The next monumental event in the space race was when the the first picture of the earth came back. Lunar Orbit 1 entered the orbit around the moon and took a picture of the earth on August 14, 1961.
The space race officially ended when the United States put the first man on the moon. The Astronauts where Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin and the phrase '' One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind '' became known throughout homes all across America. They landed on the moon on July 20, 1969 ending the space race and America was the winner.
