  • Animation of person showing sample to another person. I want to know how much of my target analyte is in this sample. Sample placed inside instrument (machine sound fx/slurping). Clip art flies in (peaks, concentration results, publications, thesis.......Screeching halt sound...... But wait! How does the instrument determine 2.5 ug/mL from peak? Instruments don't inherently know how much of your target analyze is present. They derive your sample concentrations by comparison with calibration standards. Animated instrument robot voice "I need calibration standards!"

  • Calibration standards are a set of solutions of known concentrations of the target analyze (tubes appear sequentially with audio bings). We present the calibration standards to the instrument which produces a response that we plot vs. concentration values.
  • Using Calibration Standards to analyze Samples
  • Animated person asks, "So how do I make calibration standards?" Start with a stock solution of your target analyze and make dilutions using this equation. C1 V1=C2 V2. C1 is the concentration of our stock solution, C2 is the conc of the diluted solution we are making. V2 is the final volume of our standard and V1 is the volume of stock solution we will use to make that standard. We solve for V1, the unknown variable. Examples filled in on table as this is all said. Complete table in advanced speed.
