What if you're wrong? Isn't it worth taking the chance that you'll be wrong for a short amount of time here on earth to avoid even the slightest possibility of an eternity in hell and to gain an eternity in heaven instead?
But what if you're the one who's wrong? What if God most values intellectual integrity and he has kept himself hidden as a test? What if he will only save the people who have come to their conclusions, whatever they may be, solely on the evidence and will send people to hell if they believed for any other reason?
But you just made that up! There's no reason to believe in that God.
Oh, then you see my point?
Wait, what? No, I don't.
You said that there wasn't any reason to believe in my God but the reason I gave was the exact same reason that you gave at the start of this conversation.
Which means that you actually think we should instead believe based on the evidence. Ironically, that is exactly how we should act if my God were the real one.
OK. But what if there is some evidence for God? Doesn't the possibility of heaven and hell then tip the scales in favor of that God?
But now you're just making stuff up again!
Oh, so now we're back to needing evidence?
Then I'll just update the definition of my God to fit the evidence.
