Storyboard Text

  • The Third Estate Made up most of the population, was the only taxed estate and they were not happy with the way of life.
  • The king spent lots of money that they got from taxing the third estate to build large beautiful  palaces.  They spent so much money they they were in large amounts of debt
  • The Peninsular war was a military conflict between Napoleon's empire and the Bourbon Spain
  • Waterloo is known as the site of the final defeat of Napoleon.
  • The third estate asked for the voting to be done by population but the request was denied by the other estates. 
  • Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba
  • The French civil code established under Napoleon.  The ideas of this code becomes very influensial across Europe and become known as the Napoleon reforms
  • First Estate The first estate was the king and queen. They had all the power and they didn't have to listen to anybody
  • The Third Estate now goes by the National Assembly. The also vowed to stay together and form a written constitution for France
  • Napoleonic Code
  • Horatio Nelson was a British Flag Officer in the Royal Navy.
  • A blockade is an attempt to cut off supplies, war material or communication
  • Second Estate Made up of nobles.  Known as a privledged  estate. They weren't taxed and lived happy and easy lives
  • Napoleon rose to power because of his great leadership, and his military success. 
  • The Bastille was a very large fortress in France.  It was an atempt to overthrow the king, Louis XVI.
  • Long Term: Absolutism, Unjust socio-political system (Old Regime), Poor harvest which left peasant farmers with little tax money for taxes, Influence of Enlightenment philosophes,   System of mercantilism which restricted trade, Influence of other successful revolutions, England's Glorious Revolution (1688-1689), American Revolution (1775-1783). Short Term:  Bankruptcy -  Caused by deficit spending, Financial ministers (Turgot, Necker, Calonne) proposed changes. But these were rejected Assembly of Notables voted down taxation for the nobility in 1787 Great Fear(famine) Worst famine in memory, hungry impoverished peasants feared that nobles at Estates- General were seeking greater privileges.  Estates General - meeting of the estates to try and solve conflicts    
  • Napoleon's invasion of Europe was  proclaimed to defend French trade interests, weaken  (picture to the right)> Britain's access to British India, and to establish scientific enterprise in the region.
  • Olympe de Gouges was a playwighter who was very important and influenced many people. Her plays reached many people and she was very well known. 
  • A constitution is made and creates a limited monarchy for  the King and queen but they plan not to follow it because they still have all the power
  • Committee of public safety held trails for those accused of committing treason. Also during this  time 15,000 people died on the guillotine. 
  • Emigres are all people that fled France after the French Revolution.
  • The First estate as absolute monarchs have all the power, their actions go unchecked by anybody and they have all the final say to anything that goes on.
  • The Jacobins were a  political group of the legislative assembly. They represented all of the working class The Girondist were also a political class of the legislative assembly, they represented the rich middle class.
