  • Andy slams his books and materials around his desk and mutters to himself as his peers prepare for a group assignment.
  • Andy's teacher pulls him aside to address his emotional state. "It seems you are upset. Are you having a bad day?"
  • Emotional labeling can help de-escalate conflict because it prompts Andy to acknowledge his current feeling-state directly rather than continuing to communicate it indirectly through acting-out behavior
  • After acknowledgment and discussion with his teacher, Andy is on task and ready to get to work.
