The peasants in medieval times had little money and low hopes. A peasant like this probably got thrown in this dungeon because he was stealing and that was a sin. If a peasant believed in an after world like heaven, being hung often meant that they were diverted to the opposite realm.

The people chasing after my character are knights. Knights are soldiers that served the people of the kingdom under the rules of chivalry. Chivalry is the code for leadership and loyalty that all knights abide by.
Freedom! Though, I do wonder what is over that hill...

The character is running through a town. If this was during the market times, there would be a lot more hiding places for him to hide. There would be temporary stalls, more people, signs, and products being sold.
There were paths and roads in medieval times for easy travel and trade. Most people would avoid traveling alone on these roads because there would often be a thief or two on the route you were traveling that would steal whatever you had with you.
The terrain in most medieval towns in northern Europe was full of dense forests. The terrain in most medieval towns in southern Europe is hilly mountain side.
The fields that most serfs worked at were located on the outskirts of town. The serfs worked the land hard for little pay. They lived in huts that were smaller than the townsfolk's houses. They worked for lords without the gift of freedom that the peasants had.
