At the time of the Vietnam war life was very difficult and there were many hard ships. At that time it was hard to live in Vietnam because of the loud noise of guns and bombs and lots of people lost their loved ones. It was very tough to leave your house.
At the time of the Vietnam war a girl named Tan Le was only four years old. She lived in Vietnam with her younger sister, mother and grandmother. Even though they did not want to leave Vietnam her mother decided it would be safer if they migrated to Australia.
After a few days Tan Le and her family boarded a boat disguised as a fishing vessel and migrated to Australia. it took five days and nights travelling across the china seas to Australia. The biggest fear was of pirates, rape and death.
Tan Le's mother like many others carried a bottle of poison so if any pirates came first Tan Le and her sister would drink than her mother and grandmother would drink. She thought it would be better dying just like that rather than getting killed by pirates.
When they arrived in Australia they settled in a small house in Footscray Melbourne. Her mother Mai worked on farms then on a car assembly working six days double shifts. Somehow she found time to study English and gained an IT qualification.
Tan Le's mother opened a computer store and then after a while she opened a boutique. They were very poor and they barely had any money.
