Hi, we're Mar and Nic. We are part of the LGBTQ community at Fairview. These are the challenges that we and others have faced at Fairview as part of the LGBTQ community.
Many kids in the LGBTQ community can feel outcasted due to negativity directed towards them at school.
1/3 of LGBTQ students experience dating abuse or sexual assult. 25% of transgender students report suicide attemmpts. 25-50% of homeless youth are part of the LGBTQ community.
Two helpful resources for teens in the LGBTQ community are the Trevor Project and GLSEN. The Trevor Project is an organization that helps to prevent LGBTQ teen suicide and GLSEN is an organization that educates students about the LGBTQ community.
Many LGBTQ students also feel uncomfortable going to the bathroom of their assigned gender becuase bullying can occur in the bathroom as well as gender dysphoria. It would be helpful to have more gender nuetral bathrooms in schools.
We think that the best thing we can do to help these issues would be to educate students about the LGBTQ community. Maybe even have a unit centered directly towards this topic in health class.
