  • Telescreens exist everywhere (in public, outdoors, and in every room) to monitor each citizens' every action at all times. Posters of Big Brother remind the public that he is always watching.
  • Winston works in the Ministry of Truth, where he alters past articles to erase any inconsistencies written in them and to make Big Brother seem wise and good.

  • All workers are required to participate in the Two Minute Hate, where a video is played displaying the horrible things that Goldstein has done and say about Big Brother. The purpose is to make the citizens of Oceania feel hatred towards Goldstein.
  • Winston's room has a desk in an area where his telescreen cannot see him where he secretly writes in his journal.
  • Winston writes down his traitorous thoughts in his journal and he is scared that the thought police will eliminate him for thoughtcrime.
  • The brown haired girl who caught Winston's eye passes him a note while pretending to fall. The note reads "I love you".
