Storyboard Text

  • Why did I pray? Strange question.
  • This is foreshadowing Elie's loss of faith, and showing how he didn't even know why he was praying; he didn't even know his faith.
  • Why do you pray?
  • After something bad happened, and it ended, his mind starts to think that his faith is real and he was not mistaken.
  • Thank God! You are still alive!
  • Blessed be God's name? Why, but why would I bless Him?
  • Elie is now putting logic behind the religion-- seeing that if God's eyes are really on everyone, then why is he letting this inhumane harm endure?
  • Blessed be God's name...
  • My eyes had opened and I was alone, terribly alone in a world without God, without man. Without love or mercy.
  • This is the point where it all is crashing down on him, that God is not real and is not watching over him to make sure he is safe.
  • This is his deciding factor-- his hope in God and the rest of his faith have vanished. Even the rabbi had given up hope, showing him that he could cut his final thread of hope.
  • It's over. God is no longer with us.
  • The conclusion to his story shows that he, after emerging from this dark place and being liberated from these concentration camps, regained his strength and faith, now that he can hold onto it.
  • This is what I say to the young Jewish boy wondering what I have done with his years. It is in his name that I speak to you and that I express to you my deepest gratitude as one who had emerged from the Kingdom of Night.
