  • Montresor wanted revenge on Fortunato because Fortunato had laughed at his proud, old, and honored family name.
  • CLIMAX
  • Montresor planned on making Fortunato "pay". Montresor wanted him to know why he wanted revenge and who was forcing him to pay. So Montresor started plotting against Fortunato.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Fortunato had one great weakness, wine. Montresor knew that the best way to get revenge was through wine.The conflict would be the same for any story in which a man wanted to commit a crime and not get caught and punished.
  • RESOLUTION
  • The climax of this story is when Montresto, having led a drunken Fortunato deep into the catacomb, chains him inside a vault and begins to brick in the enclosure, burying him alive.
  • After Forunato is chained and montresor begins to brick " friend" in. By the time Montresor is already to position the last brick, which will seal fortunato's fate, Fortunato becomes frantic and deseprate, than , finally unresponsive. Montresor completes his mansory work and leaves.
  • The resolution of this story comes when the reader realizes that Fortunato's murder took place fifty years ago. He was already dead as Montresor told his tale.
