Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why do they oppose it
  • Yah, and we know that this can only lead to more slavery in our country.
  • How dare they do this to us. We have been working nonstop to try and end the expansion of slavery. And this compromise comes out!
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about the Compromise
  • We declare the "Missouri Compromise" as a Law
  • Yes, we will gladly follow you and accept any law you make.
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the compromise
  • If there are more slave states than it will be more likely that slavery could spread even more.
  • This Compromise is going to ruin everything.
  • They didn’t want slavery to expand. If the compromise goes through then it will allow more new states to become slave states. Since slavery is more enticing for many people than paid labor, it is easier for it to spread.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • Welcome, we are very happy that you are on our side. We could really use more slave states for slave trade.
  • They believed that whatever the federal government decides should be accepted by everyone.
  •      Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • They feared that there will be more slave states than free states. This will make it harder for the free states to be equal in Congress compared to the slave states.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • Slavery is going to start to end. I could never imagine our life with out slaves. We might actually have to do work.
  • I cant do that. My slaves are the backbone of my whole operation.
  • They supported the compromise because it would give them more slave states. Having more slave states would allow them to have more of an important role in decisions made. Missouri was one of the states that they would get and this was a very important state to get.
  • Thanks. Glad to be apart of the slave states.
  • They believe that the national government should not have a say in any of this. They believe that this should be a state decision where each state decides whether they are a free state or a slave state.
  • How is it fair that you and your government get to choose what each individual state does. Let the states make their own decisions for a change.
  • There main fear was that it would be the start to the end of slavery. The compromise does make both the free states and the slave states equal in Congress. They fear that people will start to favor the free states.
