The setting of the story takes place near 1817 with Fortunato, Montresor, and Luchesi "Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the Carnival!"
The main issue is with Fortunato and and the narrator. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato had borne as best could.
Montresor took Fortunato down into the catacombs to try some Amontillado which is wine. "Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado.
The most intense point was also the turning point, Montresor the narrator shackles Fortunato to the wall and at first he doesn't realize whats just happened to him. Fortunato didn't understand what was happening. "In an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche, and finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered. A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite.
This is the point when Fortunato actually realizes he's being buried alive in the catacombs. He thinks he was betrayed but Montresor never really liked him. “A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form."
This is when Montresor realized killing this man didn't feel as good as he thought it would. "I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of bells. My heart grew sick.
