Oh no! What's wrong?
Rukmani's good fortune comes to an end when the monsoons begins, bringing heavy rain for days on end. The paddy field is ruined and the village is in complete disarray. Food is scarce but when Nathan breaks the dam to let water out of the field, they find fish to eat.
They're calling for men to go work.
Five years after being married, is returned by her husband because she cannot bear any children. Despite Nathan and Rukmani heeding them not to, Arjun and Thambi begin to work at the tannery. Kuti becomes ill and Ira begins to tend to him.
During Deepavali the children are given money to spend on fireworks and the whole family goes to watch the fireworks. Soon after Rukmani becomes pregnant once more and she takes Ira to Kenny to treat her infertility.
Arjun and Thambi arrange a strike to earn higher wages at the tannery, but are let go. Arjun and Thambi leave to work at a tea plantatation and Rukmani knows she won't see them again. Kenny gives Murugan a good recommendation to work as a servant for a family.
One day Raja is caught stealing from the tannery and is beaten to death. Officials come to make sure that Rukmani won't make a claim to get money from them. Rukmani and Ira cleanse the body before they cremate it. Kenny asks Selvam to help when his hospital is built.
Kuti becomes ill but suddenly starts improving. Rukmani realizes it's because Ira had been prostituting herself to get food for him. Despite Ira's efforts, Kuti dies after going blind.
