The storyboard above shows a turning point moment in Charlie's journey, his encounter at the restaurant inspired him to finally use his intelligence for good. This is the climax because Charlie finally decides to do something for the benefit of others, instead of drowing his head in his own struggles of the past.
Instead of going up to my own place I went to the diner instead. There was a new diswasher, a boy about 16.
Hey, there go the profits!
He was clearing away a table behind me, and dropped some dishes
Well, he didnt work here very long..
C'mon , do it again..
He's not so dumb. It's easier to break 'em than to wash'em..
All right! All right ,you dope, dont just stand there! Get the broom and sweep up that mess.
Here, sonny, over here. There is a nice piece behind you..
After going on an anti-intellectual binge of watching movies and amusement centers, Charlie is tired and decides to go to the diner, instead of sleeping in his apartment. Here he sees a new kid that reminds him of his old self.
The restaurant grew silent. I cursed myself for losing control and creating a scene
Shut up! Leave him alone! He can't understand. He cant help what he is... but for God's sake, have some respect! He's a human being !
After clearing the table behind Charlie, the boy drops the dishes, causing them to break. The pieces spread all over the floor. The boy stands scared, while holding the empty tray. He is confused by the taunting and insults of the customers around him.
Even in my dullness i knew i was inferior. Even a feeble-minded man wonts to be like other men. A child may know not know how to feed itself, or what to eat, yet it knows hunger.
I have ofted reread my early progress reports and seen the illiteracy, the childish naivete
The owner came and instructed the boy too clean up the mess he made. After seeing that he was not going to be hurt by the owner, he smiles and grabs the broom. The customers continues with even more degrading remarks, simply for their selfish entertainment. Charlie initially joined in their amusement.
This day was good for me. I've got to stop this childish worrying about myself-MY past and MY future. Let me give something of myself to others. I've got to use my knowledge and skills to work in the field of increasing human intelligence
Charlie feels sick when he sees the boy's dull eyes, and his eagerness to please with reminded him of his old self, and realizes that the customers were laughing at the boy because he was mentally handicapped. He suddenly jumps up and shouted, calling out the customers and defending the boy. He feels empathy for the boy, since he went through a similar struggle in the past.
How strange is it that people sensibility think nothing of abusing a man born with low intelligence.
Charlie contemplates on his old progress reports, and how they were very adolescent with his spelling mistakes. He sees that his old self wanted to be just like other people.
Only a short time ago, I learned that peole laughed at me. Now I can see that uknowingly I joined them in laughing at myself. That hurts most of all
Charlie feels like it has been a good day for him, it made him realise that he needs to stop being so concerned about himself and his struggles, stop being so egocentric, and start using his gift of intelligence for good, for the benefit of others. He realises that there are others who are mentally handicapped that go through great misfortunes, and he decides he wants to help them too. He has lived in both extremes, so he feels he's qualified.
Tommorow, I'm going to get in touch with the board of directors at the Welberg Foundation and ask for permission to do independent work on the project
