The storyboard above shows the conflict within Charlie's family. It demonstrates Rose's conflict with Matt and their differences. It also shows how Charlie have been deprived of maternal love.
Dont worry. This wont hurt a bit.
The table smells of deeply ingrained sweat, and leather.
Charlie nods. He wants Dr Guarino to like him
Here he is, folks. . A good boy. I think we're going to be good friends,eh, Charlie?
Just an accident, Mrs.Gordon. But dont blame him or punish him. I wouldn't want him to connect punishment with coming here
The look of disgust on his mother's face sets him trembling. For a short while he had forgotten how bad he is , how he makes his parents suffer.
Charlie! what did you do?
But will this really do any good?
Charlie's parents took him to Dr Guarino, in hopes that he can make him smarter. Dr Guarino lifts him gently onto the leather padded table. Charlie is confused at being restrained this way. Guarino attempts to comfort him, but his machine goes off and makes loud sounds and bright flashes of blue and red that sends Charlie into a state of panic. He wakes up to find out that he is fine.
Making Charlie normal is more important than anything else!!
Barber supply sales have fallen off, our savings are dwindling!
Charlie wimpers. The sound of anger in their voices is painful to him.
Dr Guarino gives Charlie compliments and attention, two things that Charlie truly needed as a child, he then begins to like Dr Guarino despite the horror that occured previously, only because Dr Guarino was being nice to him. He barely gets praised by his parents, therefore when he is praised by others, he values them to a great extent.
I'm not hysterical. I'm just sick of you complaining everytime I try to do something for your son. You just dont care.
You've spent almost all our savings on quacks and phonies, money i could have used to set me uo in a nice business of my own
Thats not true! But I realize that there is nothing we can do. I can bear him but I can't stand your foolish ways
He wet himself during the session, and his mother noticed it. She is furious and terribly embarrassed of the situation. She is surprised because she has constantly punished him if he wets himself, yet he still manages to do it nonetheless. Charlie feels bad that he made his mother unhappy once again, since he desires to make her happy. Matt Gordon, Charlies father, suspects that that Dr Guarino might just be a con man, and that they just got duped.
The hell with you. Now i know who's the dope around here. Me! for putting up with you.
On their way back, Charlie's parents kept arguing with each other, and this causes Charlie great distress. Matt brings up the fact that their family might not be doing so well economically, while Rose insists that Charlie needs to be normal, and that they need to do what ever it takes to achieve that goal.
As soon as they enter the apartment, Charlie rushes to a corner fo the kitchen and trembles. Matt and Rose's argument continues, and they forget that Chalie needs to be cleaned and changed. Charlie suffers negligence from his parents. Rose feels unappreciated for her efforts to help her child. Matt on the other hand feels that all the money could have been used to support the family.
They pay no attention to him.
Matt has had enough and decides to walk off from the family. This is the point where Matt seperates himself from Rose.
