  • Nick explains the differences of the West and East egg
  • "It was Gatsby's Mansion. Or rather, as I didn't know Mr. Gatsby it was inhabited by a gentleman of that name,"(9).
  • He lives next to a mysterious billionaire by the name of Gatsby

  • Nick visits his cousin Daisy and meets Jordon Baker and Tom Buchanan.

  • "Civilization's going to pieces. I've gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. Have you read 'The Rise of the Coloured Empires' by this man Goddard?" (17).

  • Tom only cares about politics if it advantages himself. He is shallow and selfish.
  • It is revealed that Tom is cheating on Daisy, and everybody knows it.

  • Nick gets his first glimpse of Gatsby, who is stretching his hand out at a green light.
