“My family owned the Cook Coffeehouse.” “We were only three: Mother, Grandfather, and me, plus Eliza who worked for us.”
“No one has told you? Poor little chickie! You’re at Bush Hill, and a good thing it is you are!”
“Where are we? And how long have we been here?”
“Don’t die, Grandfather. Please don’t die. I love you. Please, please. Oh dear God, please don’t die.”
Lucille (Mattie's mother) owns the coffeehouse. Mattie's grandfather came to help out and he has a parrot named king George. Mattie is a young girl. Eliza is the cook at the coffeehouse. All of this is back ground information thus earning it's position on the exposition
On their way to the Ludington's, Mattie's grandfather got sick so they didn't let them go through. Then Mattie and her grandfather went to bush hill because Mattie caught the yellow fever. This is the rising action since its evolving into the climax.
“Look, Eliza,” I cried. “It’s frost! The first frost! The end of the fever!”
When Mattie got better they returned to the coffeehouse. Only to not find her mother so, it was just Mattie and her grandfather. Then some robbers came in which her grandfather got shot so he died. This is the climax of the story because Grandfather died and Mattie is now left alone.
“Where are my manners? Matilda, this is my good friend Mrs. Ludington.”
Mattie found a little girl named Nell who was abandoned because her mother died from yellow fever. So , due to grandfather's death, Mattie went to look for Eliza and found her. This is also the climax because Mattie found Elisa which was also someone that Mattie was looking for. Elisa took Mattie under her wing and cared for Mattie and Nell.
Nell, Robert, and William all caught the yellow fever so Eliza and Mattie took them to the coffeehouse. Then one day Mattie went outside and to her surprise their was frost. This is the falling action because the frost had ended the fever but Mother was still to be found.
“You’ve been with the Ludingtons the whole time?”
Mattie opened the coffeehouse now that everyone was returning because the yellow fever was over. Then a carriage stopped in front of the coffeehouse. It was Mattie's mom who has returned and fully recovered from the yellow fever. This is the resolution because Mattie finally gets to see her mom after leaving Philadelphia.
