The purpose of fertilizers are to increase the essential nutrients that improve the growth of the crops. The purpose of pesticides are to reduce harvest loss from pests by using herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides by spraying fields.
Excessive use of fertilizers causes runoff into lakes and oceans via rain and sewage. This causes the algae to grow rapidly causing the oxygen levels in the ocean to decrease. This decrease in oxygen cause the aquatic wildlife to die. This unfortunate phenomenon occurs in 50% of lakes.
Pesticides have been linked to various health problems. These issues include: cancer, nervous system diseases, reproductive problems,Parkinson’s disease, childhood leukemia, lymphoma, and asthma.
Some solutions for this problem include: natural pest predators (biological pest control), trap crops (which attract pests away from the valuable crops), and crop rotation.
