In 1846, Lee got the chance he had been waiting for all his military career for when the United States went to war with Mexico. Serving under General Winfield Scott, Lee distinguished himself as a brave battle commander and brilliant tactician.
On July 1, 1863. During the first day. Lee led his men to a victory at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Ending in a Union defeat.
The second day was the most brutal. Involving 100,000 men in which over 20,000 died. The second day itself ranks as the 10th bloodiest battle in the Civil War.
During Pickett's Charge. General Pickett led his troops across enemy lines. However this ended in the Union troops decimating Pickett's troops and forcing them to retreat.
By the end of Gettysburg over 52,000 men had died. However the North had proved a point that they were as powerful as the South.
At the end of Gettysburg Abraham Lincoln had a ceremony dedicated to those who fought and diedfor the Union. This ceremony was called the Gettysburg Adress.
