A considerable amount of private business places and residential homes have also installed solar panels on their roofs to lower their energy consumption. The common Vincentian is now becoming more aware of the positive impact that solar energy can have on one’s monthly energy bill.
Within the last decade, the government of SVG spear-headed an energy-saving initiative that encouraged and facilitated the widespread change from the use of incandescent light bulbs to the more energy efficient florescent and light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs. The vast majority of the country’s population complied with this change, and consequently became more interested in replacing their old appliances with more energy-efficient ones in order to reduce their monthly energy bill.
Moreover, the country is embarking to harness the power of the volcano, the La Soufriere so that it would be less dependent on oil. According to Gislason (n.d.), SVG is partnering with Emera Caribbean Incorporated and Reykjavik Geothermal to construct a geothermal power plant below the volcano with the capacity for 10 megawatts of energy. Many Vincentians are in support of this move. Ever since they realized by looking at the changes in their light bill amounts, that energy-efficient initiatives impacts them in a personal way, namely their light bills, they are far more receptive to these changes.
