At the beginning of the study the participants were introduced to another participant who was confederate of Milgram. They then drew straws to decide who would be the teacher and the learner (confederate was always the learner).
The learner was then strapped to an electric chair and given a list of words to remember. The teacher was in another room and gave the learner a list of multiple choice words to recall the correct one from.
The teacher is then told to shock the learner if they get an answer wrong. The shocks ranged from 15v (mild shock) to 450v (severe shock).
If the teacher refused to shock the learner then the experimenter gave 4 different prods to encourage the teacher to continue. Prod 1 - Please continue, Prod 2 - The experiment requires you to continue, Prod 3 - It is absolutely essential that you continue, Prod 4 - You have no other choice but to continue.
Results - 65% of teachers continued to the highest level of 450v. All teachers continued to at least 300v.
Conclusion - Ordinary people are more likely to follow orders given by an authority figure, even to the extent of killing an innocent person. Obedience to authority is ingrained in u all from the way we are brought up.
