  • A middle-class woman believes she deserves more than the life that she has been given and dreams of having a higher status with lots of luxury.
  • Development
  • Mathilde receives an invitation to a ceremony in a high-class mansion, but she does not want to go because she has nothing to match her physical appearance to the rich women that will be there.
  • Climax
  • Loisel offers her money to buy a dress of her desire. She buys a beautiful dress but does not have any fancy jewelry to go with it. She borrows a necklace from a friend named Mme. Forestier.
  • Resoultion
  • Mathilde and Loisel go to the ceremony. Mathilde has a wonderful time and feels like she belongs. When Loisel gets ready to go and brings the garments he had brought from home that don't match quite well with Mathilde's dress, she quickly runs out.
  • When Mathilde is home, she realizes the necklace was missing. She had misplaced Mme. Forestier's necklace. Loisel retraces their steps and looks everywhere for the necklace but it is nowhere to be found.
  • The two replaced the necklace with one that is similar to it. Unfortunately, they go into debt and live a life of the poor for ten years only to find out that the necklace Mathilde had misplaced wasn't worth near as much as the one they had replaced it with.
