  • The classroom is down the hall, the first cell to your right.
  • Okay, thanks!
  • Wow these living conditions are horrible!
  • In 1841, a woman named Dorothea Dix agreed to teach Sunday school at a jail.
  • I should really do something about this.
  • The things she witnessed that day would change the rest of her life and others struggling in jail. She made history and built the first every mental hospital with great conditions.
  • Prisoners are people too!
  • Dix was horrified to see prisoners locked up with chains. Children who were accused of stealing were put with murderers. Debtors were also thrown in jail.
  • Grand Opening!
  • Everyone welcome to the first every mental hospital! In this hospital we have real doctors and great conditions for the patients. I am proud to welcome this to everyone in need.
  • Dix devoted the rest of her life to help the prisoners. She visited hundred of jails in Massachusetts. She also visited debtors jail.
  • She made the public know what was happening to the prisoners. Many disagreed with the living conditions.
  • She opened up a mental hospital with good living conditions and helped a lot with jails. She fixed a lot of unconstitutional laws and helped the public.
