King Charles I believes in the Divine Right of Kings. This means that he thinks all his power came from God. In 1628, Parliament tried to limit the kings power by the Petition of Power. Although Charles did sign this petition, he began to ignore its rules. This caused problems with Parliament.

In 1642, a Civil War broke out between supporters of the King, Cavaliers, and supporters of Parliament, Roundheads. The Roundheads were led by Oliver Cromwell.
Charles is defeated by Cromwell. Cromwell decides to set up a military dictatorship and with the help of Parliament, Charles is beheaded.

After Cromwell dies in 1658, the Army restores England's monarchy. Time passes by and after Charles II passes, James II takes the throne. Because he is openly Catholic, Parliament becomes worried.
A group of English nobles convince the ruler of the Netherlands, William of Orange and his wife Mary, who also happens to be James II's daughter to invade England. They are victorious and in 1689, William and Mary accept the offer to the throne.
