Persephone and her mother Demeter were very close, and they were always together. Persephone was very happy and lively, and loved to play in the sunshine.
But Hades, the evil Ruler of the Underworld, fell in love with Persephone, and her delightful charm. One day, he made a hole in the earth, and kidnapped Persephone to take her to the Underworld, and become his wife.
When Persephone was in the Underworld her beautiful blonde hair and stunning blue eyes turned brown. She was trapped. She missed the bright sunshine, and beautiful flowers, and most of all, her mother. Demeter was devastated because her daughter was missing. Demeter was so sad she made it winter. Demeter begged Zeus to tell Hades to give back her daughter, or she'd make it winter forever.
Zeus didn't want it to be winter forever, so he sent Hermes to get her from the Underworld. Unfortunately, Persephone ate a few Pomegranate seeds, and since that means she ate the food of the dead, she needed to go back to the Underworld at some point.
Persephone went home to her mother, and everything bloomed again. It was sunny and warm, and Persephone's hair turned blond and her eyes turned blue, just like before! Zeus knew Demeter and Persephone couldn't part with each other. So, he came up with a plan. She could go home with her mother, but she'd have to be in the Underworld for 6 months a year, 1 month per pomegranate seed she ate.
When Persephone was home, everything bloomed and it was Spring and Summer. But when she was in the Underworld, it was cold and snowy Winter or Fall.
