- I was the son of Melchor and Luisa Clemente and the youngest of seven children.
- Lusia, my mother operated a grocery store for plantation workers.

- Since my family was poor during my childhood, I delivered milk or leche to people's homes and helped do other jobs to help make money for my family.
- During my childhood I made sure that I had enough time to do what I loved doing the most, playing baseball in sandlots until I was 18.
