  • A number of organized states developed.
  • Very good! Connor, what did Southeast Asia look like? 
  • Mainland Southeast Asia consists of several North-South mountain ranges . Fertile river valleys, densely forested mountains, often containing malaria-bearing mosquitos.
  • Great! Anjelina, who were the first people to create their own state?
  • The Vietnamese, they clung to their own identity and in the tenth century, they finally overthrew Chinese rule.
  • Fantastic! Daisy, what did these new states have to deal with on a daily basis?
  • They only had limited contact with people.
  • Wonderful! Shelby, did they see any blending of cultures in this area?
  • There was Buddhism, Islam, and Confucianism throughout southeastern Asia.
  • Splendid! Avery, how were these states set up, and how did religion affect this region of the world?
  • They followed the Chinese model (called themselves emperors and adopted Chinese court rituals.) They also introduced the civil service examination. Overtime peoples of southeast Asia followed Confucianism, Buddhism, and Islam, all of which held a strong role in government, trade, and culture.
