On Maple Street, somewhere in America, we are introduced to the residents, children playing, neighbors talking When all of a sudden, a meteor-like object flies across the sky, and all of the power goes out
A young boy by the name of Tommy explained that in the comic books he reads and in the movies that he watches that the aliens look like humans, but they aren't. The aliens don't want anyone to leave, making an excuse for the power shutting off, and Tommy says that the aliens came before the meteor.
None of the residents' cars were working, and all of the power was out. Then, all of a sudden, Les Goodman's car began to work. The people blamed Les and his wife as being the aliens. A woman claims that she is awake during the early hours of the morning, and saw Les Goodman staring at the sky, as if he was looking for something. Les claims that he suffers from insomnia.
"The world is full of Maple Streets..."
"This Maple Street is not unique.."
A dark figure walks down the street, and Charlie has his shotgun and he shoots the figure, who turns out to be none other than Pete Van Horn. The neighbors become suspicious, saying that Charlie knew it was Pete, and he had some information, so Charlie was the alien because he killed Pete.
"I-I didn't mean to, I-I didn't know!"
"HE SHOT PETE!.."
The neighborhood then erupts into complete chaos of suspicion and prejudice. The neighbors are wondering whether or not they can trust their neighbors. They will eventually destroy themselves.
Two figures, are discussing how Maple Street is an experiment and how there are many Maple Streets in the world. In the story, it says, " The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout." The figures just watch the people destroy themselves.
