  • What just happened???
  • The beheading of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette was a result of being charged for treason. Even though the couple made an attempt to leave France, they were found and were declared guilty of having counterrevolutionary intrigues with other countries. The execution meant that France didn't have to deal with the national debt anymore and was able to have an equal government
  • Reign of Terror was the period where civil war brew to catch and execute enemies of the continuous revolution. It lasted from September 5, 1793 to July 27, 1794. The Terror costed the lives of 27,000 people. The Terror ended with the fall of Maximilien Robespierre, a French lawyer and politician
  • The Directory was a constitution-based French government that lasted for about 4 years. It was established because of the dictatorship from the Reign of Terror. It failed because it had a weak foundation and faced with corruption

  • Napoleon Bonaparte, a French military leader, seized political power by conducting a series of battles against countries like Austria and Egypt. When he was marked first consul, he worked to express reforms in subjects like economy and education
  • The Napoleonic Wars were a series of battles that targeted coalitions of various countries in Europe. He was successful in the end, making the Holy Roman Empire shut down and developing the Confederation of the Rhine
  • When Napoleon and his army suffered heavily in Russia, he was stripped of his title of the throne and was exiled to the island of Elba. About a year later, he escaped and returned back to France. Consequently, the Hundred Days Campaign began and attacks were initiated. Soon, the Battle of Waterloo occurred, with the French defeated by the British, with help from the Prussians. Napoleon abdicated and later died on the island of Saint Helena. Throughout the French Revolution, war has affected Europe in various angles. The debt rose, citizens lost their lives, the government was unstable, etc. Wars have impacted how the events of the Revolution played out. They had a significant role in shaping how history is interpreted today
