Roy and Mike has 10 lbs of gold.Roy and Mike wants 40 lbs of gold. His map is showing him that the every 2 miles they travel there will me 5 lbs of gold.Roy and Mike are trying to figure out how man miles they have to travel in order to reach their goal.
Roy, I don't know how many miles we have to reach our goal.
Well, Mike, according to the map, every 2 miles we travel, there will be 5 lbs of gold
So, we should use the formula for slope, or y=mx+b.
So, basically, we already have 10 lbs of gold. That'd be the b because that is the gold we had before we started, or the y-intercept on a graph.
The mx, or the amount per increase times the # of increases. Now, the map shows every 2 miles we travel, or x, we'll also find 5 lbs of gold, or m.
What's the mx?
And does y mean our overall goal for the amount of gold?
Yes it does. So if we use the y=mx+b formula it would be y=2x+10 which means we have to travel 12 miles
y=mx+b just means the overall goal = the amount per change x the amount of changes + the original amount.
