This picture is symbolizing the black box which is the symbol part of SIFT. The black box symbolizes death because it has the names of people who might have a chance of being killed. The black box also symbolizes the tradition that it has been carrying for a while because of the condition its in. It is faded and falling apart.
Tone and Theme
This picture describes what it would of looked liked on the morning of June 27th. It was a clear and sunny day with blossoming flowers and rich green grass. This is mainly what type of setting that the story took place in. Other than the fact that it also took place in the town square.
This picture is an example of figurative language because there is a line in the story that says "where the breeze caught them and lifted them". This is on pg 32 line 262 and it is an example of personification because it doesn't literally mean that the breeze caught the paper. Its just saying that to show you that the paper moved from its previouly positioned spot on the ground.
The tone of the story is suspenseful because the people of the town didn't know who was going to get picked to be killed so the town was full of uncertainty. The theme of The Lottery is that following a tradition could be dangerous. The people of the town are following this lottery blindly not knowing where it originated from. It kills one person each year for no reason and the people still believe its a good tradition.
