  • Declaration of Independence
  • The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to provide reasoning as to why the colonies wanted to become independent from the British. The Declaration of Independence was structured into three components: Introduction and Beliefs, List of Grievances, and Formal Declaration.

  • Popular Sovereignty proposed that the people are the source of government power, this is evident in the Declaration of Independence because the phrase "We the people" was utilized, and the quote "That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, derived from their just powers from the consent of the governed." exemplifies this principle because those who make the change for the government are the people.

  • The Declaration of Independence and the social contract tie in together because the social contract is a way to keep everyone mutually protected.The social contract principle is employed in this quote: "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government..." This shows that the members of the community call for a change when they see that the rights of the people are not the way they are supposed to be.

  •  The Declaration of Independence showcases the principle of natural rights the most, as this is the message that Thomas Jefferson wanted to convey to his readers. He followed John Locke principles and wanted to let people know that we have god given rights. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" This shows perfectly how he believes that we are given natural rights that we should follow.

  • The Declaration of Independence upholds these principles because we live by them today, we are told that this is what we follow and i believe that this is the correct way to govern the United States since everything is order. If I was a colonist at the time, I would have supported the Declaration of Independence because I would be aware about the injustices of King George III and I would want change for my country so that equality is achieved.
