  • Students at Hazelwood East HS were required to write an article, Catherine Kuhlmier wrote an article that had to do with teen pregnancy and the personal lives of other girls
  • First amendment rights!
  • Question before the court
  • Arguments for the petitioner: Principal Robert E. REynold issued that the article about teen pregnancy was inappropriate and violated the students right to privacy 
  • Arguments for the respondent: Kuhlmeier took the problem to the US District Court in the eastern district of missouri. They claimed that their first amendment rights were being violated (freedom of speech)
  • Desicion: Kuhlmier sued the school to the the district court, which sided with the school. Then she appealed it and the court sided with her. The Supreme Court found out about the case and ruled that their rights were not violated.
