Storyboard Text

  • Before the Battle of Tours
  • We will take over France
  • Before the Battle of Tours
  • We will go plunder the Frankish Territories!
  • During the Battle of Tours
  • The Muslims in Spain threatened to take over French territory
  • During the Battle of Tours
  • Abd er Rahman, governor of Spain, marched over the Pyrenees, possibly to the end the unrest at the northern border, but more likely to plunder the Frankish territories.
  • After the Battle of Tours
  • RETREAT!!! RETREAT!!!
  • Although the exact location of the battle remains unknown, most historians assume that the two armies met each other where the rivers Clain and Vienne joined. Charles Martel packed his army tightly in a large square.
  • After the Battle of Tours
  • I have created a new style of bread to celebrate the Frank defeat of the Arab army!
  • For six days the two armies watched each other, with just minor skirmishes. Neither of them wanted to attack. The fight commenced on the seventh day. According to a Frankish source the battle lasted one day;the Muslims had retreated during the night after the Franks had ransacked their camp
  • The Arab army retreated back south over the Pyrenees. If Martel had fallen, then the Muslims would have easily conquered Europe. Charles, who earned his nickname Martel (hammer) in this battle, drove the Muslims in the following years from the area between Arles and Avignon.
  • The victory was celebrated by Frankish bakers who fashioned bread in the form of the Islamic crescent and served it to celebrating Franks who devoured the symbol of the invader. Today, the French croissant still has pride of place on most French breakfast tables.
