King Philip II of Spain (a devout Catholic) was mad because he thought that a Catholic, not a protestant like Queen Elizabeth should be on the throne of England. He sent his Armada with 30,000 soldiers to attack England.
Darn that Elizabeth! I will get her!
HAHA FAT CHANCE!
The Spanish had the best Navy in the world. England the underdog actually wins and Spain runs away like a dog with its tail between its legs. They flee to Scotland get caught in storms and half of them die. Now the world is England's to explore.
The English made their first settlement in the Americas called Roanoake (1587) off of the coast of present day North Carolina. John White a Mapmaker and artist led the group. He went back to England for supplies and was held up in England due to the Spanish and English war. When he returned 3 years later the only thing he found was an abandoned settlement and the word Croatoan written on a post.
About 20 years later The Virginia Joint Stalk Co. got a charter to settle the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. They got several people to move there and their goal was to look for gold and trade for fish and furs.
The Virginia CO.
The colonists had a rough start. People died from diseases and from starvation. That started to change when John Smith came and then when he left it got bad again. The people stopped farming and spent their time looking for gold to meet the demands of the Virginia Company. They also got into conflicts with the Native Americans.
Everyone has died since John Smith left *sob*
Yes, We were lazy, we looked for gold instead of worrying about would we would eat
The Virginia Co. didn't make any profit hardly from the gold, the fish, and the furs so King James took their charter away and made Jamestown the first Royal Colony for England in America.
