Declaration Of Independence
Articles of Confederation
Click to Edit DescriptionDeclaration of Independence was created in June-July 1776 and was ratified on July 4th 1776. It announced that the thirteen colonies were now 13 independent sates and they were no longer under British control. All men are created equal.
In the Articles of Confederation representatives of all thirteen states come together to create a confederacy called the United States of America. States are not allowed to work with any states from outside countries without the permission of the congress. Each state gets one vote in congress.
New Jersey Plan
The Constitutional Convention consisted of 11 delegates out of the 13 states gathered together to rid of the Articles and create a entirely new, stronger government.The group that met was one of the most prominent groups to meet.
The Virginia Plan was a proposal for a legislative branch. It proposed that states with a larger population should have a higher number of representatives then sates wuith a smaller population.
The New Jersey Plan was created to oppose the Virginia Plan. The Virginia plan basically left the National government in the hand of the more populous states. So the New Jersey plan propsed that each state just get one vote.
The Great Compromise took place in 1787 because during this time everyone wanted to know how many representatives each state would receive. Roger Sherman proposed a two chambered congress which pleased almost all delegates from each state.
