Once upon a time before white settlers came, magpies were black.
The magpies often swooped on the natives when they were fishing for food.
One day new people came. They were unlike the natives, who had white skin.
The magpies started to attack the new settlers when the were trying to chop down trees.
One magpie swooped to low and hit one of the settlers on the head. the settler lost his balance and fell into the river.
As soon as the settler fell into the river the magpie's feathers changed colors. White started appearing on the magpie. That is how the magpie came to be black and white.
