Storyboard Text

  • Sorry to hear that. Maybe you need some time to yourself.
  • Hello sally. How are you?
  • What is self esteem? An evaluation of our overall worth that consist of both positive and negative.
  • Hi Pat, not good. I am not my usual self since I moved in with three roommates.
  • You may be right. My behaviour has changed so I was researching earlier about the different ways we come to know ourselves.
  • After reading, I learnt two ways how we come to know ourselves and the knowledge has helped me a lot. They are introspection and from an observer’s perspective of yourself.
  • Maxwell House Legal Department Copy Room
  • And interesting too. I will send you the article so you can read it too. It may help you at the new office when you move to Trinidad.
  • You are right. Knowing the self is very important. It allows us to gain knowledge of our personal attributes.
  • Thanks Sally.

  • Male
  • It says here that introspection is explicitly examining your own thoughts, feelings and memories.
  • PSYCH NEWS ONLINE KNOW THE SELF: Two Strategies Used To Explain How We Come To Know Ourselves
  • Yes and taking an observer's perspective is by looking at the way people react to them. Basically, trying to see themselves the way they think others see them (Vantage point of others).
  • So what else did you learn?
  • Impression Management - controlling information to steering others' opinion in the service of personal or social goals (Schenkler and Pontari (2000)
  • Why would people engage in impression management?
  • I read about impression management
  • Usually to make a favourable impression on others
  • How can we control how others see us and prevent ourselves from falling into the trap of trying to manipulate how we see ourselves?
  • By being aware of self guides through self-evaluation monitoring systems... our 'actual self', our 'ideal self' and our 'ought self'.
  • So one's impression management can become risky business?
  • Yes, Schenkler and Pontari noted becoming excessively concerned over other's opinions can cause anxiety, thereby increasing health problems.
